Abstract
In O Santo da Montanha Camilo Castelo Branco’s novel provides us with a patriarch marked by a paradoxical condition. On one hand, and as it is the case for the patriarchs of the Ancient Regime, he is a fatherfigure who defends with conviction and vehemence a conservative ideology (buttressed by values such as linage and patrimony); on the other, he is a father who is able, so to speak, to relate to his daughter in a modern way, he is loving and tolerant in relation to Mecia’s whims. We will try to reflect on this question, recurring to authors such as Girard, Habermas and Luhman.
